Australian Capital Projects and covid-19, what is your Action Plan?
Welcome to our first event
Although the initial plan for this meetup was for it to be held face-to-face, due to the current restrictions on social gatherings we will be running this session on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83431619486
We are thrilled to be holding this event and honored to have a special keynote speaker who is an icon in the field of construction and risk management. He will present an important hot topic during these challenging times.
About the topic:
While the full commercial impact of the COVID-19 on Australian construction sector will become more apparent in the next few weeks or months, there are many questions about the magnitude of a potential wide range of impacts, their expected timeline and correlations as well as possible mitigation actions which organisations should put in place now. There are many ways to assess the organisation’s risk exposure and while there is no right or wrong answer, the speaker will highlight the importance of having a comprehensive commercial risk assessment on project schedules and cost estimates, preferably as quantitative and scenario-based as possible, enabling a risk-based mitigation action plan being developed and implemented. Even though the situation, its circumstances, and boundaries will change, leading organisations need to put processes and action plans in place now and then monitor and update regularly as needed.

Open Your Eyes to Your Blind Spots
With a lot at stake and daily pressures, successful leadership is made possible as project managers manage their blindspots – especially in a Covid-19 environment!
Do we know what our blind spots are? Are we identifying them? Are we managing them properly? What elements do we need to pay attention to in particular in a Covid-19 environment?
In this dynamic session, Amany will engage the PMI Sydney Chapter events audience to define and identify blind spots as well as discuss approaches and tools to proactively manage them.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
(1) Define and identify blind spots;
(2) Discuss approaches and tools to proactively manage blindspots whether in a normal or Covid-19 environment.
Look forward to seeing you at the event.

Portfolio Balancing - A critical part of portfolio management that is often neglected
Portfolio management has two focus areas. Choosing the right projects (Portfolio Definition) and then delivering them (Portfolio Delivery). Nowadays portfolio delivery is well understood. Organisations appreciate they have limited capacity and a portfolio of projects they have committed to deliver. Often when organisations are looking for a “Portfolio Manager” they want someone who will take charge of this environment and get the projects over the line; that is, a “Portfolio Delivery Manager.”
Less well practised is the first area of portfolio definition. Some organisations just go with the flow and see what projects emerge and make decisions as they go along, others may go through a prioritisation process and execute the highest priority projects first.
Less common is an effective portfolio balancing approach. Portfolio balancing ensures that the overall portfolio delivers the best outcome for the organisation from the limited resources and capability that it has. Simply delivering the highest priority projects can result in a poorer overall outcome.
The presentation describes how to achieve the best results using all the steps in the portfolio definition process. A mature portfolio balancing methodology means that when the unexpected happens (such as CoViD-19) organisations are better placed to know how to deal with it.

Design Thinking: Innovative solutions for the right problems
Without finding innovative ways to succeed, today’s constantly changing environment can quickly leave organisations behind. However, the pressure and urge to innovate can also lead organisations to produce products and services that no one needs.
Design Thinking is a creative approach that helps align your product or service with the end- user. It integrates the needs of people, the possibilities of technology and the requirements for business success. It works through a better understanding of the problem, bigger creative exploration and continual testing of ideas.
This session introduces participants to the design approach. Using design techniques to better understand user needs, participants will have the tools to find innovative solutions for the complex problems of today.
Chris Doherty is Noetic’s Creative Design Director.
Chris integrates design thinking and a user-centric approach into Noetic’s consulting methodologies. Chris has extensive experience in design, visualisation and creative workshopping that allows for the rapid generation of ideas and content from a group of participants, consolidating this in visual form for ease of use and recall. He leads a team of design professionals at Noetic, dedicated to finding creative ways to communicate and innovative approaches to problem solving.
Previously, Chris has managed his own design practice and has a career spanning visual design, marketing and illustration for award winning agencies, global investment banking and innovation teams.PMO Sydney Meetup
