Your Career: Hunt or Perish
With ever changing market dynamics especially for professionals, the question arises whether one should be a passive career participant or an active participant in this market. The former is what I call as the grazing approach & the latter as the hunting approach.
In the past you could graze through a multitude of jobs. If one did not crystallise today, there was always someone else tomorrow who’d be knocking on your door with another opportunity, perhaps a better one. There was no real urgency. Competition was relatively low. If you didn’t pitch yourself well for the job on hand, where was the hiring company going to go? After all, there was a shortage of talent and they were importing people by the ship load to help keep up with the skills shortage.
But that’s not the case now? Is it?
There are fewer roles available. Those that are available, could turn out to be your worst nightmare, so being selective in who you join is as important as finding the job, especially if mental health is an important consideration for you. And shouldn’t that be an important consideration for everyone? You spend 8 hours a day, for 40 years at work. One third of your life is at work. Don’t you deserve better? Additionally, the environment is constantly changing. Is automation reducing jobs or is it adding to newer jobs? Is mining, manufacturing, oil & gas going to be a sustainable industry to be a part of, or because of changed governmental priorities are those industries back in? Are permanent jobs, permanent anymore? Or is the whole world heading to short term work. The World Economic Forum submitted a report which stated that by 2030 we will all be running our own mini businesses. Short termism is in. Permanence is out. After all a permanent role is permanent with 4 weeks’ notice making that permanence a fantasy.
