This month we will hear from Amelia Birch and her experience working in a male dominated field, and how our decisions may have been influenced.

Amelia Birch is the Owner and Sommelier of Famelia Wine Bar & Bottle Shop on Enmore Road, Newtown - a hybrid venue dedicated exclusively to wines made by women. With more than 20 years’ experience spanning hospitality, wine, business operations, marketing, events and communications, Amelia brings an intuitive, customer-focused and deeply human approach to wine service. Her career has been shaped by a belief that wine should feel welcoming rather than intimidating, grounded in listening, connection and exploration. Early formative years at Sydney’s Glass Brasserie sparked her love of wine through daily tastings and mentorship from industry leaders, where she learned that great wine service isn’t about knowing everything... It's about curiosity and matching the right wine to the right person.

Famelia was born from Amelia’s desire to create a safe, inclusive space for learning and discovery, while actively addressing the gender imbalance within the wine industry, where women make up just 16% of winemakers globally. Through curated wine flights, education-led events and a thoughtfully selected bottle shop, Amelia champions women winemakers, women-led wineries and woman+ teams who are too often overlooked. Her work sits at the intersection of advocacy and hospitality: supporting women makers, challenging industry norms, and proving that exceptional wine experiences can be both accessible and values-driven. Above all, Amelia is passionate about creating environments where people feel confident asking questions, expanding their palates, and finding joy in wine on their own terms.
