About Presentation

Investment in Active Transport continues to increase in Australia and globally. The challenge is how to track investment benefits and to determine where the next cycleway or pedestrian walkway needs to be built. How to measure number of people using the infrastructure is difficult as there is no event which tracks the commencement or completion of a journey unlike Bus, Ferry, Light Rail, Metro or Train modes where a card is used to tap-on and tap-off indicating a distinct journey. This presentation covers how Transport for NSW is using data from multiple sources such as sensors, Strava, DSpark & Bureau of Meteorology and data science to model journeys and kms travelled across LGAs, regions and state. This allows calculation of health, sustainability and economic benefits to complete the benefits profile for an investment. On the qualitative side, Transport for NSW is capturing Voice of Customer from social media, surveys and other digital channels to understand what customers are saying and convert it into Walking, Cycling and Commuter Sentiment score. Once the quantitative and qualitative data are combined, it provides a near real-time pulse of Active Transport. This capability compliments connecting corridors strategy with data for future investments.
